About Megan

I’m a parent. I’m an educator. And I’m really good at helping students improve their SAT and ACT scores.

I graduated from Rice University (so you know I’m a good test taker.) I have a Master’s of Education in Counseling Psychology from the University of Houston and am a certified high school counselor. I also have a certificate in College Admissions Counseling from UCLA.

In short, I have professional training and experience as a classroom teacher, tutor, and college admissions counselor. More importantly, I have over 25 years of experience working with students of all abilities to earn more points on their college admissions exams.

I am familiar with the SAT and ACT, the strategies that help students score better, and recent updates to the exams. I know that real score improvement is more than a review of content or a bunch of tips and tricks. It is a balance of knowledge, strategies, focus (lots of psychology and brain science here), and an understanding of each student’s personal strengths and weaknesses.

When I started College Prep, LLC, in 2006, I left a job in the Houston school district where I developed a test prep / college planning course and worked as a college counselor. I wanted to break free from the bureaucracy and spend ALL my time helping students and their families prepare for college.  I can meet in the evenings or on weekends.  I don’t need to wait until students are in high school to make suggestions on course selection and academic planning. When I help students prepare for the SAT or ACT, I can adapt what I teach to the individual student. (I wrote the curriculum; I’m not following some big-box corporate workbook.)

I can take the time to really get to know the people I work with—yes, you are people, not numbers.  I know my students’ strengths, weaknesses, and goals. When students take my SAT prep classes they have chosen to give up extra free time so they can improve the chances of getting into the college of their dreams.

I have the privilege of working with some of the most unique students who are truly interested and motivated in maximizing their college options. I love what I do. I am looking forward to meeting YOU and your student soon… please get in touch!

More about Megan:

I have been co-hosting “The College Prep Podcast” since 2014. Listen to some recent episodes on our website, ApplePodcasts, Spotify, or your favorite platform.

I have two children. My daughter graduated from high school in 2019; my son in 2025. Both had to take my prep class. Being a parent is a humbling experience at times. It is also stressful. I wish I could say the entire college admissions process went smoothly at my house. It did not! But I do understand the challenges from both a personal and professional perspective.

My daughter’s graduation from Rice University!

Scoring well on the SAT / ACT can open doors for admission and scholarships. It is important, but it is not worth jeopardizing a student’s physical / mental health or integrity. I take a light approach. (Many parents comment on how much laughter they hear when I’m tutoring.) I try to make the process as non-threatening and fun as possible, given that we are preparing for an exam. I want to be encouraging while still providing accountability and quality instruction. I will never call a student out for missing questions or making a mistake. And I will never promote strategies that compromise a student’s academic integrity.

I would describe myself as neuro-typical and a good test taker, but I have a lot of experience working with students who aren’t. I am familiar with most test accommodations (extended time, use of a text reader, and multi-day testing) and I’ve worked with students with many physical, educational, and psychological differences. I am happy to adapt my teaching to meet the unique needs of each student.

I live in Sugar Land, Texas with my husband and two rescue dogs. I enjoy reading and needlepoint. I am proud to have won my neighborhood holiday light decorating contest multiple times. Years ago we had “Elvis’s Blue Christmas” with three life-size cut outs of Elvis (the “Three Kings”) to go with our blue light display. Recently we have won with the Snow Miser from “The Year Without Santa Claus”. My husband is a good sport, if not active contributor, to my holiday light hobby.
